A Look at Oprah Winfrey’s Television Career

One of the world’s most recognizable personalities, Oprah Winfrey began her television career in the 1970s in Nashville. In 1976, she received the opportunity to lead her own show, entitled People are Talking, in Baltimore. Eight years later, Winfrey moved to Chicago to serve as the host of A.M. Chicago, and she emerged as a television sensation who surpassed her competitors in ratings within a few months.

In 1986 she marked a major milestone in her career with The Oprah Winfrey Show appearing in syndication across the United States. Offering an alternative to tabloid-style programs, it turned into a multimillion dollar success by the end of its first season. Its popularity allowed Winfrey to become an entrepreneur with Harpo Productions, O Magazine, and other endeavors. The Oprah Winfrey Show remained a ratings sensation for 25 years, and it ended its run in 2011. The following year, Winfrey launched her own cable station, OWN.

Throughout her career, Oprah Winfrey has interviewed many notables, such as John Edward. The former host of Crossing Over with John Edward, he garnered attention as a psychic medium.
